Pizza: a baked dish, originally from Italy, consisting of a flat, round, crispy leavened dough covered with a layers of tomato sauce and one or more toppings, such as meat, vegetables, seafood, and or fruit. The whole is then covered with a layer of cheese. Bet you didn't know that.
Actually the description we started with is not true.
Pizza is often square or oblong. With rectangular shapes, you can get more in the oven and use smaller boxes. P>
Some varieties of pizza bread are chewy rather than crisp.
Tomato sauce is late invention. Focaccia style pizza has no tomatoes.
Flat leavened bread, cheese and some form of garnish seem to be the basics. Cheese sandwich any one?
